Classical IPR in Concert: Harlem Quartet 2019

The Harlem Quartet was founded in 2006 by the Sphinx Organization. Their mission is to advance diversity in classical music, engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire that includes works by minority composers.

The Harlem Quartet recently performed at Interlochen Center for the Arts. This week on Classical IPR in Concert, you can hear that program.

Interlochen Center for the Arts

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra recently visited Interlochen Center for the Arts for the first time since 2006. This week, Classical IPR in Concert presents this recent performance from the stage of Kresge Auditorium.

In October of 2019, the Interlochen Arts Academy Wind Symphony, Theatre Department and IPR joined forces for the "Kids Commute Circus Extravaganza."

Hundreds of people - and lots of kids! - joined Kate Botello and the performers in Corson Auditorium for a concert of mostly circus-themed music that focused on the lesson of how music expresses emotion.

The Northwestern Michigan College Concert band recently gave a performance called "Musicals that Changed Our Lives." Conducted by Pat Brumbaugh, the ensemble presented medleys from six different popular musicals.

Every summer, classical musicians from around the country gather on northern Michigan’s Beaver Island for the Baroque on Beaver Festival.

This week on Classical IPR in Concert, we feature highlights from the 2019 Baroque on Beaver Festival. Click here for the complete roster of musicians in the Festival Orchestra and Chorus. 

The physicians, nurses, researchers and other members of the Detroit Medical Orchestra are featured this week on Classical IPR in Concert. The ensemble's mission is "Bringing Healing through Music."

The program for this broadcast includes music of Mozart, Elgar and Vivaldi. Dr. Michael Cher, Chief of Urology at the Karmanos Cancer Center, is the featured soloist in Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. 

This week, Classical IPR in Concert features the October 2019 performance of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra.

Kevin Rhodes conducts "Symphonie Fantastique" by Hector Berlioz and "Giants of the Night" by David Amram, featuring flute soloist Nancy Stagnitta.

This week on Classical IPR in Concert, we'll hear a performance by the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in Bay Harbor, Michigan. 

Conductor Libor Ondras and the GLCO present Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Overture, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 (featuring Angela Kim) and Mendelssohn's "Scottish" Symphony.

Matthew Shepard Foundation

This month is the anniversary of the death of Matthew Shepard. In 1998, Shepard, who was gay, was brutally beaten in a hate crime. He later died of his injuries.

Shepard's death brought national attention to hate crimes based on sexual orientation.

Guitar virtuoso Mak Grgic and world-renowned violinist Martin Chalifour recently came to Interlochen. Their performance in the Dendrinos Chapel Recital Hall featured works by Vivaldi, Falla, Paganini, Piazzola and more.

David Holland and Crispin Campbell wanted to bring all six of Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concertos to northern Michigan for a long time. They recently accomplished this goal with the region's first-ever Brandenburg Festival.

This week on Classical IPR in Concert - we'll go to Studio A with Interlochen Arts Academy composers, poets and singers. Inspired by a collaboration between their instructors, students teamed up to create works that gave full voice to all three disciplines.

Performances in Studio A were engineered by Brock Morman, Michael Culler engineered the performances in the Dendrinos Chapel and Recital Hall.

Classical IPR in Concert: IAA Faculty Chamber Music

This week, Classical IPR in Concert features members of the faculty of Interlochen Arts Academy.

Pianist Ya-Ju Chuang, violinist Ara Sarkissian, violist Renee Skerik and flutist Nancy Stagnitta perform a concert of works by Valerie Coleman and Bohuslav Martinů, along with pieces by Beethoven and Mozart.
