This week on Classical IPR in Concert, we'll hear a performance by the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in Bay Harbor, Michigan. 

Conductor Libor Ondras and the GLCO present Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Overture, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 (featuring Angela Kim) and Mendelssohn's "Scottish" Symphony.

On Saturday, September 21, IPR's music director Amanda Sewell will be meeting listeners at the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra concert at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in Bay Harbor.

Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra

This weekend, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra will give the world premiere performance of the Violet Viola Concerto. Composed by David Lockington and featuring the GLCO's music director Libor Ondras as the viola soloist, the piece was commissioned by Robert Pattengale.

This week Classical IPR in Concert features the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Chorus.

Music Director Libor Ondras conducts the program from April 2019. It includes works by Shostakovich, Mozart and John Williams.

Libor Ondras holds a violin from the 'Violins of Hope' project. It's a collection of violins that made it through the Holocaust.

During the Holocaust, some six million Jewish people were killed. Some of them were musicians. 

Currently, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra has a violin which made it through the Holocaust. The violin is a rich brown color and has a beautiful inlaid Star of David decorating the back of it.

8 a.m.: Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra's Messiah plus Bach & Rutter (encore from 2017)

10 a.m.: Interlochen Arts Academy presents Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" (encore from 2017)

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Chorus opened the 2018-19 season with a performance featuring works by Gwyneth Walker, Joseph Suk and Sergei Prokofiev.

This concert includes the world premiere of Gwyneth Walker's Great Lakes Overture. Libor Ondras conducts.

Classical IPR in Concert airs Friday at 8:00p.m.

This week Classical IPR brings you a concert by the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Libor Ondras. It's a program they performed this summer at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts.

Dylana Jenson and David Lockington appear with the orchestra to perform the Concerto for Violin and Cello by Johannes Brahms. The concert also includes familiar works by Smetana, Copland and Bernstein. Listen Friday at 8 p.m.

Gwyneth Walker is the composer in residence for the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra. On their season opening concert this weekend, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra will be giving the world premiere of Walker’s Great Lakes Overture.

 The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra recently presented its Bach Family Festival Concert. The concert featured music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philip Emanuel Bach and Johann Christian Bach, as well as Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf.

 Pianist Christopher Harding is associate professor and chair of piano at the University of Michigan. He’ll be the soloist this weekend with the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra.

Gary Gatzke is the principal double bassist of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra and the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra. He is also the interim Executive Director of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra. Gatzke will be one of several soloists featured this weekend in the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra’s Bach Family Festival.

Gary Gatzke recently visited Studio A at Interlochen Public Radio to play music by Dittersdorf, Handel and Saint-Saens. Hear the entire performance and interview below. 

Jensen, Ondras, and Lockington on Classical IPR

This Friday evening Classical IPR presents a performance featuring violinist Dylana Jensen, violist Libor Ondras, and cellist David Lockington. The concert from the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Sunday Series was last month in Harbor Springs. Listen at 8 p.m.

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Brass Quintet will perform this weekend as part of the GLCO's Sunday Recital Series. The members of the quintet visited IPR's Studio A to give a preview of some of the music they'll play Sunday and to chat about how they got together as a group.

  The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra recently presented a concert called Sol Español. The music included pieces by three Spanish composers as well as American composer Gwyneth Walker’s settings of text by the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral. The concert featured guest appearances by the Grand Rapids Guitar Quartet and soprano Amy Cross, and the music was conducted by Libor Ondras.

  Brian Morris is a professor and director of guitar studies at Grand Rapids Community College. He’s also a member of the Grand Rapids Guitar Quartet, and that ensemble will be performing this Saturday with the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra.

Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra recently closed its 2016-2017 season with a concert called "Americana Plus." The “Americana” part of the title refers to the fact that almost every piece on the program is by an American composer. The “plus” refers to Beethoven's Choral Fantasy. On Friday, July 28 at 8 p.m., hear the entire concert broadcast on Classical IPR.

The entire concert program is available below. The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra was joined by the Great Lakes Chamber Chorus for the final portion of the concert.

Libor Ondras has served as the music director of the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra since 2013. He also is a gifted violist, and he will present a recital on Sunday, March 26 as part of the GLCO’s Sunday Series.
