This Thursday evening, Sir James Galway is the featured soloist with the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra. Leslie B. Dunner conducts.

Tune in at 7 p.m. to hear commerical recordings by James Galway.Then at 7:25, we'll go live to Corson Auditorium for the main event. The concert downbeat is at 7:30 p.m.

The program includes the Flute Concerto No. 2  by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Second Symphony of Johannes Brahms.

World renowned flutists Sir James Galway and Lady Jeanne Galway are visiting Interlochen Center for the Arts this week.

Ahead of their arrival in northern Michigan, Sir James spoke with Classical IPR from his home across the Atlantic.

Matthew Shepard Foundation

This month is the anniversary of the death of Matthew Shepard. In 1998, Shepard, who was gay, was brutally beaten in a hate crime. He later died of his injuries.

Shepard's death brought national attention to hate crimes based on sexual orientation.

This weekend the Festival Choir at Interlochen performs "Considering Matthew Shepard" by Craig Hella Johnson. 

The concert is free and will be in Kresge Auditorium at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Conductor John Bragle came to IPR to discuss the piece and share some movements from "Considering Matthew Shepard."

Guitar virtuoso Mak Grgic and world-renowned violinist Martin Chalifour recently came to Interlochen. Their performance in the Dendrinos Chapel Recital Hall featured works by Vivaldi, Falla, Paganini, Piazzola and more.

The 2019 World Youth Symphony Orchestra performs for the first time this Sunday evening. You can hear them live on Interlochen Public Radio.

Cristian Macelaru conducts the World Youth Symphony Orchestra in the Symphony No. 11 by Dmitri Shostakovich. Macelaru has conducted the World Youth Symphony Orchestra in recent summers and is an alumnus of Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp.

Classical IPR in Concert features the Traverse Symphony Orchestra this week.

The program from March 2019 includes Moussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 with guest soloist Ralph Votopek. Kevin Rhodes conducts.

Sounds of the Season, Interlochen's highly-anticipated holiday show, is performed by Interlochen Arts Academy students and faculty. It is a family-friendly concert centered around this festive time of year.

The Interlochen Arts Academy Band and Choir present holiday songs, with favorites for all ages. This annual celebration has become a tradition for many local residents, with classical holiday music and a sing-along. The show also features Interlochen Public Radio's own Kate Botello!

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Chorus opened the 2018-19 season with a performance featuring works by Gwyneth Walker, Joseph Suk and Sergei Prokofiev.

This week Classical IPR brings you a concert by the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Libor Ondras. It's a program they performed this summer at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts.

Dylana Jenson and David Lockington appear with the orchestra to perform the Concerto for Violin and Cello by Johannes Brahms. The concert also includes familiar works by Smetana, Copland and Bernstein. Listen Friday at 8 p.m.
