The Metropolitan Opera’s 2025-26 season of Saturday matinee broadcasts continues on March 28 with a performance of Verdi's heartbreakingly beautiful tragedy "La Traviata."
Soprano Lisette Oropesa, who recently triumphed at the Met in Bellini's "I Puritani," now reprises a signature role: Violetta, the courtesan who leaves behind her whirlwind lifestyle to find true love and ultimately sacrifices everything for that love. Oropesa is joined by tenor Piotr Buszewski as the ardent young Alfredo and baritone Luca Salsi as Alfredo's bourgeois father Germont, who's determined to separate the couple. Maestro Antonello Manacorda conducts the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus in Verdi's timeless score.
Listen to the broadcast of "La Traviata" on Classical IPR at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

From the Met: "Verdi's musical-dramatic ability to portray the individual in a marginalized relationship to society keeps this work a mainstay on the world's stages. The vocal and emotional scope of the title character is enormous — from her Act I show-stopper aria 'Sempre libera degg'io' to the haunting regret of 'Addio, del passato' in Act III to the extended Act II confrontation with her lover’s father, Germont."
