Great Lakes Center for the Arts is proud to present Almost Heaven: John Denver’s America as part of its 2026 Summer & Fall Season. The production runs June 30 at 7:00 PM, July 1 at 7:00 PM, and July 2 at 2:00 PM, and celebrates the music and legacy of one of America’s most beloved singer-songwriters. Tickets are on sale now.
For an entire generation, John Denver’s voice served as a defining musical presence—an unmistakable blend of folk warmth, pop clarity, and country storytelling. His songs offered comfort, optimism, and a sense of shared experience that continues to resonate decades later.
Almost Heaven revisits that legacy with reverence and simplicity, inviting audiences to reconnect with the melodies that helped define a cultural era.
Timed with the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday, the production reflects on a uniquely American musical voice and the enduring power of songs that connect generations. The cast, musicians, and creative team bring together accomplished artists with connections to Northern Michigan and stages across the country, highlighting the exceptional caliber of talent found right here in the region.

This lecture traces the unfolding conflict in the Middle East over the past two and a half years, examining how each development shaped the next. Drawing on deep historical roots, it explores why these disputes have proved so enduring, so emotionally wrought and so hard to end.
CHRISTINA MICHELMORE received her BA from Smith College and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Pennsylvania. She lived and worked in the Middle East for seven years—in Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Pakistan. In 1984, she joined Chatham University’s history department, which she chaired off and on for 30 years. She wrote academic articles on American views of Muslims and Arabs and contributed Op Eds on U.S. foreign policy. After 9/11, she focused on public education about Middle Eastern people, cultures, and politics. She directed the “Communities of Islam” program in 2002 and was named Pennsylvania International Educator of the Year in 2004–2005. She retired in 2014.

They routinely sell out venues three times the size of Hall Auditorium, so we encourage guests to secure tickets early. American Tree is an exhibit that explores the role trees played in the formation of the United States 250 years ago — and the role trees will play moving forward into this nation’s next 250 years. This exhibition features the work of 28 artists. Set in Glen Arbor — named Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in February 2026 — the exhibit celebrates trees in a wide variety of media, styles, and materials. It interprets the pivotal role trees played in the history of this nation.
At the same time, American Tree is an exhibition that asks what our relationship with the forests and woodlands looks like today? Is it purely transactional and commercial? Is there respite and renewal to be found in the woods? And what is our blueprint for the forest ecosystem in the next two centuries? What does a United State of Trees look like? Why should we care?
Monday thru Friday: 9am – 3pmSaturday: 12pm – 4pmSunday: 12pm – 4pm
