The Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates human handwork in its By Hand project. On April 20, musicians Martha Meek and Laura Hood will talk about the value and joy of making music by hand. Meek is the director of the Martha Meek Music Studio in Suttons Bay. Hood teaches music, and chairs The Leelanau School art department. The program begins at 1 pm.Contemporary music is often about consuming, rather than creating, and more often the result of digital enhancements and electronic additions. In this program Meek and Hood will talk about what happens in the brain when people make music, how playing an instrument – whether stringed, brass or produced with the vocal cords – enhances and enriches life. A group of Leelanau School music students will also take part in the discussion, and talk about their experience as hand music makers. This By Hand program is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30, and is comprised of a series of visual art exhibitions and community conversations. The By Hand project enjoys the support of a Michigan Humanities Bridging Michigan grant. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org / EVENTS.
