Women & Water Exhibit Opening Reception

Women & Water Exhibit Opening Reception

Join us for the opening celebration of Women and Water: Woven Portraits from Around the World at the Petoskey District Library. The program begins with a land acknowledgment by LTBB Tribal Chairwoman Winnay Wemigwase and a presentation from Amanda Weinert, Anishinaabe consultant and educator, honoring the sacredness of water and the Anishinaabe teachings that recognize water as life and celebrate the vital role of women as its protectors. Then, learn briefly about the upcoming Water is Life Festival. The reception will be followed by a welcome to this inspiring traveling exhibition of 29 handwoven jacquard portraits by artist Mary E. Burns, honoring women from more than 20 countries who protect, study, and advocate for water. Enjoy light refreshments while exploring the exhibition and meeting fellow community members.

Women and Water: Woven Portraits from Around the World is a traveling exhibition featuring handwoven jacquard portraits by artist Mary Burns that honor women who work with, protect, and advocate for water across the globe. Representing scientists, activists, educators, and Indigenous water protectors, these powerful textile works explore the deep connections between women and water and invite viewers to reflect on their own relationship to this vital resource.

The exhibit will be on display on the Petoskey District Library’s second floor August 27-October 15, 2026 alongside related programs, docent-led tours, book displays, and community conversations that highlight themes of water, environmental stewardship, and women’s voices from around the world.

Partners making this possible: Michigan League of Handweavers & Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation.
