Wild Wednesday: Dunes and Northern Michigan Beach Habitats

Wild Wednesday: Dunes and Northern Michigan Beach Habitats

Join LTC environmental education staff at the Charlevoix Public Library for an evening in one of northern Michigan’s most dramatic and least understood landscapes.

Great Lakes dunes are among the tallest freshwater dunes on earth, and the beaches and blowouts of our shoreline are home to a community of plants and animals so specialized that many exist almost nowhere else.

We’ll explore how dune systems form and move, and meet some of the rare and remarkable species that depend on them, including the Pitcher’s thistle, a plant that grows only on Great Lakes shores.
