Hiroshima Remembrance Candle Float Ceremony on Boardman River

Hiroshima Remembrance Candle Float Ceremony on Boardman River

We will gather at 8:30 PM to create the floats (all materials provided); just simple paper bags which we decorate to hold our candles that float down the river. At 9:00 PM we will join together in a circle to share thoughts, poems and songs related to peace. Please bring something to share if you would like.

We will float the candles, walk in silence along the bank and up on the bridges to accompany the candles down the river as people in the kayaks and canoes will paddle along, guiding floats if needed. They will pick them up at the end and paddle them back to the launch area.

Folks have gathered at the Boardman River since the early 1980’s to commemorate the victims of the atomic bomb, dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, by the United States in 1945. We also honor the victims of all wars and share ideas about how we can work towards world peace.

Please bring a chair if you need one as we gather together in a circle. Everyone is welcome.
