Trumpeter and Interlochen alum Caleb Hudson returns to northern Michigan for a weekend of rehearsals and concerts with the Traverse City Philharmonic.
In a conversation with Classical IPR, Hudson reflected on the formative years he spent at Interlochen, the early musical moment that inspired him to choose the trumpet and what it’s like to tackle Baroque concertos for the upcoming program.
Hudson performs the piccolo trumpet with the Traverse City Philharmonic, playing two concertos in a varied program with music by Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, George Walker, Astor Piazzolla and Gabriela Lena Frank.
"Playing one Baroque concerto on piccolo trumpet is hard enough. Playing two back-to-back is tough. There’s going to be plenty of high notes," says Caleb Hudson.

Hudson also discussed his album "Nothing Less," recorded in collaboration with an all-star group of chamber musicians during the pandemic. He shared how the project blended spontaneity and how composing his own music pushed him into new creative territory.
Caleb Hudson appears in "Bach & Beyond" with the Traverse City Philharmonic, guest conducted by Leslie Dunner, on Saturday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 16, at 3:00 p.m. at Dennos Museum's Milliken Auditorium.
