Some lawmakers want to prevent the Department of Health and Human Services from issuing rules restricting access and use of vaping products. Lawmakers debated the bill in front of a House committee Tuesday.

Judge halts Michigan’s flavored vaping ban

A Michigan Court of Claims judge says the state ban on flavored vaping products must be lifted.

That’s while underlying litigation opposing the ban plays out in court. Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s administration issued emergency rules in September. The Department of Health and Human Services says youth vaping is a public health crisis.

Starting Wednesday, Michigan vape shops will have to stop selling flavored nicotine products. The final rules of the ban were announced two weeks ago.

  The state has launched a program to help kids stop smoking, in part so students don’t get suspended from school.

 

An increase in students using e-cigarettes has led to many schools implementing automatic suspensions for smoking.

 

A recent state survey found 25 percent of seventh and 11th graders in the region say they vaped within the last 30 days. In Emmet County, youth vaping increased by 84 percent over the last two years.

A new survey says marijuana use among 19 to 22 year olds is the highest it's been in 35 years.

An annual survey from the University of Michigan follows 12th graders after graduation, both in and out of college, to study trends in drug and alcohol use.

Flavored vaping products will be banned in Michigan under emergency rules that were issued by the state Department of Health and Human Services Wednesday.

Brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers have 14 days to remove flavored vaping products from their inventories that are available to the public, accofding to the department.
