The Interlochen Collection: Celebrating the 50th camp season

In this 1977 concert at Interlochen's National Music Camp, Howard Hanson conducted three of his own works, including the world premiere of the Sea Symphony on poems of Walt Whitman.

In 1977, Interlochen Center for the Arts celebrated its 50th camp season.

A World Youth Symphony Orchestra concert on August 7 featured guest conductor Howard Hanson.

Hanson had conducted student orchestras at Interlochen since the camp's first summer in 1928. 

In this 1977 concert, Hanson conducted three of his own works, including the world premiere of the Sea Symphony for Chorus and Orchestra on poems of Walt Whitman.

On this program, we revisit this concert and hear Hanson conducting his own music.

All recordings are from a concert on August 7, 1977 that was also broadcast on Interlochen Public Radio/WIAA.

All music was composed and conducted by Howard Hanson and performed by the World Youth Symphony Orchestra.
