Metropolitan Opera: 'Tristan und Isolde'

Metropolitan Opera

On Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m., hear the Metropolitan Opera's broadcast of "Tristan und Isolde" by Richard Wagner.

The Metropolitan Opera's 2025-26 season of Saturday matinee broadcasts continues on March 21 with a live broadcast of Wagner's monumental music drama "Tristan und Isolde."

This eagerly anticipated event, conducted by the Met's Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, stars soprano Lise Davidsen as the Irish princess Isolde, opposite tenor Michael Spyres as the warrior Tristan. They are joined by Ekaterina Gubanova as Isolde's maid Brangäne, who seals the couple's fate with a love potion; Tomasz Konieczny as Tristan's devoted attendant Kurwenal; and Ryan Speedo Green as King Marke of Cornwall – Tristan's uncle, and Isolde's husband. Maestro Nézet-Séguin leads the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus in this revolutionary score.

The performance, in a new production by Yuval Sharon, will also be shown in movie theaters Live in HD, and intermissions will feature backstage interviews led by HD host Lisette Oropesa, as well as the Opera Quiz.

Listen to the broadcast of "Tristan und Isolde" on Classical IPR at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026.

Read the synopsis from the Metropolitan Opera.

From the Met: "Wagner's breathtaking meditation on love and death holds a unique place in the opera world. It is based on an ancient myth, and to explore this well-trod territory, Wagner created a drama in which daily reality is dismissed as an illusion, while truths about life, love and death are revealed as if in a fever dream. The vocal challenges, the sumptuous symphonic scale of the orchestral writing, and the mystical nature of the story, make this awe-inspiring work a phenomenon of the repertory."
