The Metropolitan Opera’s 2024-25 season of Saturday matinee broadcasts continues with a double bill of French operas.
The first half of the broadcast celebrates the 100th anniversary of Maurice Ravel's "L’Enfant et les Sortilèges" (The Child and the Enchantments), which premiered on March 21, 1925. The second half features Francis Poulenc's "Les Mamelles de Tirésias" (The Breasts of Tiresias). French conductor Manuel Rosenthal, a close friend of both composers, led the Met Orchestra and Chorus in these archived recordings from 1981.
From the Met: "We’ll celebrate the 100th anniversary of Maurice Ravel's opera "L'Enfant et les Sortilèges, with a libretto by the great Colette. This 1981 performance stars Hilda Harris as a naughty child who learns a magical lesson about compassion and consequences.
"Then, we'll hear Francis Poulenc’s surrealist "Les Mamelles de Tirésias," starring Catherine Malfitano as a housewife who decides to discard her gender and become a general. Maestro Manuel Rosenthal led a distinguished ensemble cast and the Met Orchestra and Chorus."
