The Metropolitan Opera's 2025-26 season of live Saturday matinee broadcasts concludes on May 30 with the network premiere of "El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego" – "The Last Dream of Frida and Diego" – by Gabriela Lena Frank.
This vibrant opera by the acclaimed American composer, with a libretto by Nilo Cruz, imagines a magical reunion between the Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, who had a famously stormy relationship in real life. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard stars as Frida, whose death has separated her from her physical and emotional pain, but also from her art. Baritone Carlos Álvarez is Diego, who calls to his beloved on the Day of the Dead as he approaches the end of his own life. Soprano Gabriella Reyes plays Catrina, the imperious but mischievous guardian of the dead. And German countertenor Nils Wanderer makes his network broadcast debut as Leonardo, an actor whose devotion to his art inspires Frida. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met Orchestra and Chorus in Frank’s dynamic, colorful score.
Listen to the broadcast of "El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego" on Classical IPR at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
