Search for missing plane ends, will resume later

Benzie County Sheriff's Office
This aircraft, registered to Evergreen Exploration, went missing Sunday night near Frankfort.

Investigators have still not found a missing plane in Lake Michigan. They suspect it crashed Sunday night about four miles off the coast of Frankfort

Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel says the pilot contacted air traffic control to say he was having issues.

“The last thing they heard from the pilot was that the engine had locked up and was dead, and then it was shortly thereafter that that they lost radar contact with them,” says Schendel.

He says law enforcement searched Sunday night and all day Monday but could not find the plane. He says Michigan State Police will start looking with an underwater autonomous vehicle in the next week or so.

Schendel says a pilot and passenger were on board.

“My whole goal in this is to find the aircraft if possible and bring closure to the family," he says.

Schendel says he has contacted both families.
