Kill tags, coyotes and duct tape

Coyote
At its January 2026 meeting, Michigan's Natural Resources Commission made it easier to kill coyotes year-round on public land. The season was previously 9 months, with a 3 month quiet period to allow mothers to wean their pups.

Today, we talk about changes to hunting regulations and coyote management. And we hear about some budget numbers that made our reporter's jaw drop.

Every month, the group of people in charge of regulating all things fish and wildlife-related in Michigan meets.

The Natural Resources Commission is watched closely by people who hunt and fish … environmental groups … and our own Ellie Katz.

Ellie is our environment reporter and her job involves paying a lot of attention to Michigan's natural resources. So we checked in with her about some of the consequential things discussed and decided at this month's NRC meeting.

Here are a few things they discussed:

  • electronic kill tags
  • coyote hunting season
  • the abysmal state of funding for the DNR's Wildlife Division

Ed Ronco is IPR's news director and the local host of "Morning Edition."
Ellie Katz reports on science, conservation and the environment. She also produces stories for Points North.
