President Trump wants to bulk up the U.S. maritime industry and have more shipping handled by vessels under the flag of the United States.

That will take merchant mariners, and they're in very short supply. Traverse City is home to the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, one of just seven such academies in the country.

We go aboard a training tugboat on Lake Michigan to learn more about how they train and what the future might hold as demand for these jobs continues to grow.

Claire reported for Interlochen Public Radio from 2024 to 2026. She covered general assignment news with a focus on labor, growth, and the economy of northern Michigan.
