Polestar LGBT+ Community Center of Traverse City opened its doors Saturday. It's the first of its kind in northern Michigan.
John Young, vice chair of Polestar’s board of directors, says its a place for the community to connect and attend programs and support groups.
Polestar had already been running a youth group prior to opening its doors. That group will continue at the center.
Young says they plan to add a parent support group along with trans and senior programming and an after-school teen program.
Young says it’s taken them over two years and many private donations to make this community center a reality. He says the closest center like it is in Grand Rapids.
The Woodmere Avenue center will begin regular hours in August and will be completely volunteer run. It serves Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Benzie, Kalkaska and Antrim counties.
