There is a child care shortage. That’s not going to be a surprise to many families, especially those in rural areas.
In a recent Dome Magazine article, Ken Winter outlined the problem in northern Michigan. It’s bad enough that the chambers of commerce in the region are making it a priority issue.
Mary Manner, Great Start Coordinator for Venture North Funding and Development, joined Stateside to talk about the state of child care in Michigan. In her conversation with host Lester Graham, she discussed the severity of the day care shortage in her area, why the most significant shortage is day care for infants or children still in diapers, and why a lack of access to training for daycare personnel is particularly important. She also discussed what happens when an area lacks child care, what efforts can be pursued to boost child care throughout the state, and how business groups have helped out.
