We hear so much about data breaches and hacked passwords, but what is it really all about? What does an attacker do with your passwords, credit card information and other hacked data?
Thomas Holt is a professor of criminal justice at Michigan State University. He explores these questions in a recent article on TheConversation.com. According to Holt, there is a hidden, and often times not-so-hidden, marketplace where hacked information is bought and sold. When sensitive information is stolen, many corporations and individuals can be blackmailed into paying huge sums of money to keep the information private or to avoid future cyber attacks.
