Katy Ambrose and Lauren Hunt visited IPR to discuss their new album "Looking for a Window" and ways that they advocate for women in brass.

Separately, they are Katy Ambrose, assistant professor of music in horn at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and Lauren Hunt, Linda VanSickle Smith French Horn Chair and Director of Brass Studies at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Together, they are the Lanta Horn Duo, and they prioritize sharing musical perspectives of women who occupy male-dominated spaces.

Each musician spoke about their own experiences and challenges they faced during their educations and professional careers and how they are working to unlearn certain ideas and teach different ideas to their own students.

Their first album together is called "Looking for a Window," and its official release on Oct. 23.

The album is one of their efforts to address underrepresentation of women in the field of brass instrument performance and in classical music more broadly.

All pieces on "Looking for a Window" were composed by women, and the title piece, composed by Alyssa Weinberg, was specifically commissioned for this album. The piece is inspired by the poem "Home" by Warsan Shire and is a musical portrait of a person trying to escape intimate partner violence.

Ambrose and Hunt are presenting a free recital on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Interlochen's Dendrinos Chapel.

Dr. Amanda Sewell is IPR's music director.
