On Friday, the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department will hold a memorial for the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
The ceremony takes place at the Grand Traverse 9/11 Memorial Park at 897 Parsons Road in Traverse City. Those attending will gather around the roughly 3000-pound World Trade Center beam for moments of prayer and silence to honor those lost.
Metro chief Paul Mackin said that includes 343 firefighters who died that day.
"They still went to work and and put forth every effort they could to to make a difference and try and save lives in those towers," said Mackin. "So I think the significance to the fire service and is that it's about that call to duty and and ultimately potentially having to make that ultimate sacrifice."
That ceremony will begin at 8:30AM and go to 9AM. All are welcome. Those who cannot join in person can stream the event from the Grand Traverse Metro Facebook page.
"To remember and never forget is the best way to honor those that perished that day," said Mackin.
