Help create a sound portrait of Michigan’s waters

This Saturday, northern Michigan singers are invited to lend their voices to an unusual sound project led by artist Fritz Horstman.

What: Water Voices, a collaborative and experimental vocal project
When: Saturday, October 11, 3-5pm
Where: Northwestern Michigan College Fine Arts building, room 115

Horstman, currently the artist in residence at Tusen Takk in Leland, is creating a sonic tribute to Michigan’s surrounding waters — using only the human voice. Right now, he's calling the project Water Voices. He's inviting the public to participate this Saturday in Traverse City.

Rather than using traditional instruments or recordings, Horstman plans to act as a conductor, guiding participants in and out of the soundscape, mimicking waves, ripples and flows with layered vocalizations.

In practice, each participant will select one sound they can produce using their voice or body that mimics a water-related noise — such as gurgling, bubbling, splashing or flowing — while Horstman will signal changes to gradually increasing in volume, speed or intensity.

But the final piece won’t be scripted down to the second.

“It will require some trust, of course… And there will be some funny moments, there will be some fun moments, there will be some moments when maybe we're a little awkward with each other,” Horstman says. “But we have to just trust that we're doing something enjoyable.”

All participants will be credited in any resulting work that comes from the project. Whether you're a trained vocalist or just someone curious to experiment, Horstman encourages you to come and be part of this creative experience.
