The Benzie Area Symphony Orchestra (BASO) will present a free concert for kids of all ages at 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, in Corson Auditorium at Interlochen Center for the Arts. Designed with young listeners and their families in mind, the afternoon will feature “The Composer is Dead,” a musical whodunit by composer Nathaniel Stookey with text by Lemony Snicket, along with music from the animated films “Ratatouille” and “How to Train Your Dragon.”

The concert will also feature a special performance by the Benzie Youth String Program, which introduces young people in Benzie County to string instruments and ensemble playing. The young musicians will take the Corson stage in front of an audience of their own peers.

Admission is free for all ages, thanks to the support of Blarney Castle Oil and Propane and the Benzie Sunrise Rotary Club.

The Fall Women’s Retreat (rescheduled from July) will be held September 25 - 27 on Earthwork Farm. Facilitated by Lisa Franseen, Kelly Kieft and Ashley Murray, women are invited to join us as we seek to connect with one another, the Earth and our inner selves.

It is a rare gift we can give ourselves, to put aside our many roles and make space for oneself. Imagine having uninterrupted time to share your own story, knowing you will be heard and honored.

Together we will engage in “whole-body” participation - sharing our stories, listening deeply to other’s experiences, spending focused time in nature, indulging in something creative, lightly facilitated group discussions, perhaps guided meditation and movement, readings, journaling, and reflective stillness amongst the trees.

When women gather in this way, empowerment happens! With one another’s unconditional support, our authentic selves can emerge and guide us closer toward the life we are here to live, one in line with our values, our heart, and our purpose.

This gentle movement practice brings peace and tranquility to your day and moves energy and circulation in the body, helping ease pain and strengthen our muscles, joints, bones and spirits.

Led by instructor Flora Biancalana, this class is very approachable for all experience and mobility levels. The class is done standing, or in a chair, and does not require any special equipment or ability.

Suggested Donation: $10/class

This historical display started in August and has been extended until September 29, at the Alden District Library. This introductory course will teach participants how to write a vignette. Each session will be interactive, as part of a roundtable format. Participants will take part in verbal warmups to create dialogue and shape the writing group, explore brainstorming techniques, craft rough drafts, and learn how to refine and write vignettes in final form.

Vignettes are snapshots of a moment in time, flashes of memories, glimpses of an episode in your life. A series of vignettes, sequenced together, can become a memoir about an important period in your life. Vignettes are not short stories – they have no plot. They are not meant to be essays.

Created by artist Mary E. Burns, the exhibit features 29 handwoven jacquard portraits celebrating scientists, activists, educators, artists, and Indigenous water protectors from more than 20 countries. Through intricate textile art, the exhibition explores the universal importance of water and the women whose work helps sustain and protect this essential resource.

The exhibition will be on display on the Petoskey District Library's second floor from August 27 through October 15, 2026.

Throughout its run, the library will offer docent-led tours, related programs, book displays, and community conversations that explore themes of water, environmental stewardship, Indigenous knowledge, and women's leadership.

Torch Area Artisans Guild (TAAG) meets every Tuesday from 10am-12pm. We have been creating art and contributing to our community for over 40 years. We are quilters, embroiderers, knitters, weavers, painters, potters, jewelers, and more; all artists welcome!
