Michigan songwriter Max Lockwood brings both of his bands to the same stage for a night of original indie rock and a Tom Petty tribute.

The double bill brings together two projects fronted by Michigan songwriter Max Lockwood. Rivereye, his newer band, released its debut self-titled album in April 2026, blending indie rock with Americana, grunge, and pop. The Insiders, the night's headliner, deliver a note-for-note Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers experience that has sold out rooms across the Midwest. Several musicians play in both bands, giving the evening a shared, homegrown feel from open to close.

White-line woodcut, also known as the Provincetown print, is a distinctive printmaking method developed in the early 20th century in Massachusetts. Unlike traditional woodcuts that require multiple blocks for color, this technique uses just one block to create a multicolor image. Carved lines define shapes and remain white in the final print, while watercolor is brushed directly onto the block and transferred to paper. This process blends the structure of carving with the expressive qualities of painting, producing vibrant, one-of-a-kind impressions. In this class, participants will learn how to design, carve, and register a block, apply watercolor to create luminous effects, and experiment with layering color. The method offers both precision and spontaneity, making it accessible to beginners while engaging for experienced artists. Students will leave with unique prints and the skills to continue exploring this painterly form of printmaking.

Photographer and Michigan native, Steve Loveless, has been capturing the stunning atmospheres of northern Michigan for decades. From starry skies to local icons and panoramic wonders, this exhibit will explore the captivating images that define his work.

The opening reception on September 26 at 4:00 PM is free and open to the public.

Early fall can be one of the nicest times to visit Vermilion Point. With luck, there will be blue skies, no frost, warm water, fall color, and no bugs. Tom Allan, who lived at Vermilion Point for eight years, will lead a cranberry-picking field trip at this remote preserve. He’ll cover a little history on the old cranberry farm and the life-saving station, and a little bit of wetland and interdunal ecology. Bring your own bucket to fill!

HEART OF A TREE, SOUL OF A STORM
OPENING RECEPTION: September 25 from 5-7pm

Creative works rooted in a fallen tree and shaped by the 2025 ice storm that changed the landscape.

​​​In the early morning hours of March 29–30, 2025, a beloved 150+year-old, 70-foot-tall Basswood tree fell during a devastating ice storm. Located at Bier Art Gallery and Pottery Studio, just south of Charlevoix in Norwood Township, the tree was a natural landmark—towering, graceful, and deeply rooted in the community.

Charlevoix Circle of Arts invited artists to honor this fallen icon and the ice storm that changed the landscape through works of art. This juried show will feature artwork created directly from the Basswood tree itself, as well as works inspired by the March 2025 ice storm.

​Recognition will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place works as part of the exhibit.

The Jack and Tucker Harris Working Forest Reserve has so much to offer. Fields of wildflowers in the summer, great birding opportunities, a beaver dam, elk wandering through the property, and brilliant fall colors. Brad will guide you through a three-mile hike of the property so you can experience it all.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of The Northwoods Improvisers! The band formed in 1976 in Traverse City by Mike Johnston, Mike Gilmore and John Plough. Originally a total improvising electro-acoustic ensemble, they switched to an all acoustic instrumentation in 1980. Greatly influenced by the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, they combine free jazz, indigenous music from around the world, bop and improvisation.

The ever morphing group is currently comprised of bassist Mike Johnston, drummer Nick Ashton, Dominic Bierenga and Donovan Boxey on wind instruments, violinist Mike Khoury, Jack O’Brien on cello and bass, and Tony Holland on sax.

On the night of the concert, doors will open one hour before showtime. During that time, the galleries will be open for ticket buyers to view our current exhibitions, shop the museum store for waters and light snacks, or enjoy a cash bar. The galleries, store, and bar will not be available during intermissions or after the concert.

Trail run 5K at the Leelanau State Park trails off Densmore Road by the Woosley Airport in Northport, Michigan. Expect a challenging and fun trail loop with professional timing and 5-year age groups. This event is chip timed. TCTC and MiTri members receive an automatic discount at checkout.

All participants will receive a shirt and a custom trail finisher’s medal.

Michigan’s Medicinal Mushrooms is an interactive workshop led by Certified Michigan Mushroom Expert, nutritional therapist, and holistic health coach Tyler Davidson, exploring the healing potential of fungi native to Michigan. You’ll learn the basics of anatomy, taxonomy, safe use, and research-backed health applications. Each species includes foraging and identification guidance with field samples for hands-on learning. Additional topics cover traditional use, survival, and bushcraft. Resources for continued study and dedicated Q&A time are included. This workshop is ideal for those who want to advance their natural medicine journey with fungi and learning to forage for personal use.
