Other Sessions in 4-Part Series: Cézanne & History of Still Life Painting (June 2). Manet (June 9). Picasso (June 16).
This year’s series features a fresh lineup of artists for 2026, giving returning and new students alike the opportunity to explore new perspectives. This is a class to not only learn the techniques of still life painting but also learn about the methods of history’s great still life painters. Each class will start with a brief illustrated presentation, beginning with The History of Still Life Painting and subsequently covering artists such as Cézanne, Manet, Picasso and Hockney.
Following the presentations, students will seek to incorporate ideas learned into their own paintings. The instructor will give frequent demonstrations and provide close personal attention to each student. This is a series of individual classes. Join us for one session or all four.
Week One: Cézanne & History of Still Life Painting (June 2)
Week Two: Manet (June 9)
Week Three: Picasso (June 16)
Week Four: Hockney Imagined Still Life Paintings (June 23)

Jun 24 Wednesday
Students will learn to explore imagery expressionistically (with emotion) using acrylic paint on heavy watercolor paper. The group will gather at the Thoreson Farm and utilize its surroundings for inspiration with varied study methods mixed into the exploration. Painting outside, weather permitting, will be one focus of this workshop.
Brenda will instruct vivid, rich color methods of underpainting and layering of paint from washes to thick, buttery paint strokes (impasto). Drawing with paint to create a composition and composing with energy will also be taught, along with paint application, color mixing, and proper paper preparation.
Sessions will explore techniques and individual approaches. Create one to two completed paintings per day. Although this class is intended for intermediate students, all skill levels are welcome.
