Old Growth Forest Network Hike @ Pyatt Lake: The Bill Carls Preserve
Old Growth Forest Network Hike @ Pyatt Lake: The Bill Carls Preserve
Join us for a family-friendly hike to celebrate the induction of Pyatt Lake: The Bill Carls Nature Preserve into the national Old-Growth Forest Network (OGFN)!
The Basics
We will meet at the trailhead on Pyatt Road, where we’ll kick off the event with a brief ceremony, featuring remarks by GTRLC and OGFN. Then, we’ll embark on a guided, interpretive hike along the preserve’s scenic 1-mile trail.
Pyatt Lake is among our region’s most unique and ecologically rich landscapes. Protected in 1992, this preserve is one of the last remaining examples of a “wooded dune and swale complex” habitat in northern Michigan. It also holds a special place in our history as the Conservancy’s first land preservation effort, with diverse groups, from local artists to school children, coming together to protect this land from development. Over the years, the preserve has grown to 159 acres through eleven expansions. It is also proudly home to the first universally accessible trail system on Old Mission Peninsula.
Now, Pyatt Lake joins an elite group as the 13th location in Michigan recognized by the OGFN. The Network aims to identify and ensure at least one forest in every forested county across the U.S. is preserved and celebrated, offering a roadmap of family-friendly hikes highlighting the beauty, complexity and diversity of our nation’s oldest forests.
Come celebrate this exciting milestone with us and experience the wonder of Pyatt Lake for yourself! For a full list and map of OGFN forests, visit www.oldgrowthforest.net. For more information about Pyatt Lake, please visit GTRLC’s website here.
