Pat Brumbaugh, the conductor of the Northwestern Michigan College Concert Band, spoke with IPR's Christy L'Esperance about the upcoming concert in Traverse City, titled "All That Jazz."
The performance features concert band arrangements of jazz tunes, including melodies Frank Sinatra.
Though many classically trained wind players in the ensemble were initially unfamiliar with jazz and swing styles, Brumbaugh enthusiastically led the learning process.
"When I told the band that we were going to do this jazz program, the clarinets, flutes, oboes and bassoons were going, 'Oh no, we don't know how to play jazz, we don't know how to swing.' We'll learn," said Brumbaugh. "They've embraced it and they're doing a terrific job."
The NMC Concert Band consists of a combination of 90 college students, amateurs and professionals ranging from ages 18 to 88. Rehearsals are held every Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at Milliken Auditorium. Those interested in joining the ensemble are encouraged to contact Brumbaugh.
"These people are like a family. We have a wonderful relationship," said Brumbaugh. "They're so excited about making music."
The NMC Concert Band 2025 Fall Concert will be held this Friday, October 17 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Milliken Auditorium in Traverse City. The concert will also be livestreamed online.
