The winner of the men's division, Sean Saxton, spent four hours and one minute on the course and won by less than four seconds,
Saxton, from Delaware, paused to remember his father after crossing the finish line. They had planned to race together last year, but his father passed away just days before.
"So I wanted to come back here. I had some unfinished business," he said. "This one meant a lot. I actually kind of wanted to win it for him. I didn’t know if I would, honestly."
Emily Bonawitt, from Ohio, won the women’s division in just under 4.5 hours. Her tracker malfunctioned along the course.
"This is my third time racing up here in Frankfort and my first win ever at an Ironman 70.3," she told IPR. "But they didn't know I won because they thought I skipped half the course."
Eventually, they verified Bonawitt's GPS tracker data, securing her win.
Also among the racers was Dexter Holland, lead singer of the band The Offspring.
The Ironman will return to Frankfort next September. When the race came to Michigan in 2019, it was held in Traverse City.
