November 15th is the start of firearm hunting season in Michigan, which runs until the 30th. That got us wondering about the best ways to cook and serve venison.

Myles Anton is the executive chef and owner of Trattoria Stella in Traverse City. He spoke with Stateside’s Cynthia Canty about his favorite methods for preparing venison.

Burnt Toast Makes You Sing Good is the beguiling title of the latest book from writer Kathleen Flinn.

It's billed as "A Memoir of Food and Love from an American Midwest Family".

The Midwest Flinn writes about is largely the family farm near Flint, in Davison.

The Flinns and good food seemed to go together: where you find one, you'd find the other.

The book is a wonderful, loving story of a Michigan family, and you get recipes, lots of great recipes. Just what one would expect from the author of The Sharper Your KnifeThe Less You Cry and The Kitchen Counter Cooking School.

Flinn says the book title "Burnt Toast Makes You Sing Good" refers to her grandmother who would accidentally burn her toasts in the oven.

Recipe Directions

Remove steaks from refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for thirty minutes.  

Bacon and Fromage Blanc Scrambled Egg Croissant

  • *Local eggs
  • *Fromage blanc
  • *Croissant
  • *Green bor kale
  • *Baby red onion
  • *Bacon, cooked

Recipe Directions

Heat one teaspoon olive oil in a medium metal skillet. Per croissant, add two eggs and cook over medium heat for a few minutes until eggs are almost set. Remove skillet from heat and stir in one tablespoon fromage blanc per two eggs. Let eggs rest for two minutes.

Recipe Directions
Slice four cloves garlic. Saute garlic in a large metal soup pot with one tablespoon olive oil over medium low heat for three minutes.
