Points North: The fight over Sleeping Bear Dunes

Sleeping Bear Dunes turns 50 this month. It’s a destination that brings well over a million visitors to the dunes along Lake Michigan every year

 

But it took nearly a decade to establish the National Park site because of heated opposition from residents. Many feared the federal government would take over their land and displace their communities.

 

Racial tensions in the 1960s also spilled over into the fight.
