Geraldine Brooks met Tony Horwitz at Columbia University’s journalism school. After graduation, they got married and became foreign correspondents. Eventually they settled down together on Martha’s Vineyard and had two children. Geraldine became a writer of historical fiction, and Tony was a journalist and writer of non-fiction. Both won Pulitzer Prizes for their writing. Then the unthinkable happened: Tony died suddenly of a heart attack at age 60. Geraldine’s latest book is a memoir about her life with her late husband, called “Memorial Days.” She spoke with her friend and former National Public Radio journalist Jacki Lyden via Zoom in February of 2025.
