This week on Kids Commute, we're going green with Elphaba the so-called Wicked witch, and her hated roommate turned friend, Glinda the Good!
"Wicked" tells the "untold true story of the witches of Oz" through music, dance, beautiful sets and costumes, and a lot of heart.
With music and lyrics by composer Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holzman, this musical is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West", which is based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and its 1939 movie.
The musical opened on Broadway in 2003 at the George Gershwin theatre, and remains running today, celebrating 20 years on Broadway this year, as well as multiple national and international tours.
Watch 4 different Elphabas, past and present, perform "Defying Gravity" together here.
Explore this enchanting musical and the power of female friendship on Kids Commute this week as we listen to:
- "The Wizard and I"
- "What is this feeling?"
- "Popular"
- "Defying Gravity"
- "For Good"
And, for even more backstory on how some of the music was written from the composer himself, check out the "Wicked" Tiny Desk Concert from NPR!
