Show Tunes S4 EP 20 Oklahoma! (1943)

Original Cast Album, "Oklahoma!" 1943
Original Cast Album, "Oklahoma!" 1943

We drop the needle on the classic musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II

Set at the turn of the 19th Century in the Oklahoma Territory, "Oklahoma!" is the story of farm girl Laurey and her two suitors - cutie-pie cowboy Curly and lurking farmhand Jud. With whom will she go to the box social? Will farmers and cowmen ever be friends? How do Will and Ado Annie settle their prickly relationship? Let's drop the needle and find out!

A note on our recording: our version of the Original Cast Album is a fairly truncated version of the score; we'll fill in with our Bonus Material!

Awards:

"Oklahoma!" opened before the Tony Awards were established, but the show garnered Rodgers and Hammerstein a special Pulitzer Prize in 1944!

Biggest Hits:

The Surrey with the Fringe on Top
Oklahoma!

Honorable Mentions:

I Cain't Say No - Celeste Holm's version of the iconic Ado Annie song in its original, saucy form. It's an eyebrow-raiser if you've never heard it before!

The Farmer and the Cowman (movie version - bonus material) - a note from Kate on this one. I LOVE this number. A pal of mine once played Aunt Eller in a stage version of "Oklahoma!" At the end of the number, Eller ends the fight by firing her shotgun - only my pal's shotgun didn't go off. So she just yelled "BANG!"

Shudder Alert:

Lonely Room - a creepy song for a brooding Jud Fry, cut from the movie and the original cast album - we'll hear it in our bonus material
