In Phase 1, students worked with market researcher Woody Smith of Avenue ISR and project coordinator Dr. Ashley Drake to develop an in-depth anonymous survey to assess the current state of teen mental health in northern Michigan and to better understand their mental health needs.

In total, the YWI Students gathered survey results from 530 high schoolers across 20 schools and five counties.

YWI students then analyzed their collected data, synthesized their key findings, and developed a list of 11 recommendations for schools, policymakers, community leaders, and youth-focused organizations to consider.

To share their findings and recommendations more broadly, in Phase 2 of the project YWI students worked with podcast producer Juliet Hinely to develop a 5-episode podcast series to dig into some of the big questions that came up along the way:

- Why is mental health education important and where should it come from?

- Why is high school so stressful and what could make it better?

- Why are students hesitant to seek help and what could help alleviate their anxiety?

- Why is nature and exercise good for us and how can it be more incorporated into a school day?

- What is a “chill room” and how do they benefit students and schools?

The student producers from the Youth Wellness Initiative are Payshence Bruce, Ellen Grams, Jürgen Griswold, Ella Kirkwood, Eva Lawson, Bobbie Paalman, and Lauren Tkach.
