February 15: Valentine Show

  • Lena Dorey invites you to snuggle up with your sweetie while enjoying our Valentine show filled with music, storytelling and comedy. Vocalist, Peg Carrothers, sings some sweet jazz standards accompanied by the Copper Cats with Jerry Younce on guitar, Bill Carrothers on piano, Harry South on bass and Carrie Biolo on percussion.  The Red Jacket Actors share a couple of Valentine calamities in “Someplace on Fifth” and “9-1-1 in the 906.”  You'll find out why Molly is surprised when McLain enters a poetry contest; and why a loose tooth and caramel candy is a dangerous combination!  And in “Madame Blanc-Public Eye,” she asks, “Can one be in love with history?”  There will even be a poem or two from Martin Achatz, the Poet Laureate of the U.P.!  Join us for this sweet show for all ages!

February 22: Winter Solstice

  • Winter may be the coldest and darkest time of year, but in this episode we lighten things up as we celebrate the midwinter Festival of St. Lucia, known as the festival of light.  It's an hour of uplifting music, poetry and song with Younce Guitar Duo, Robin Lee Berry and the Copper Cats with Jerry Younce on guitar, Bill Carrothers on piano, Carrie Biolo on percussion and Harry South on bass.  Don't let the mid-winter blues get you down!  Gather the family around the radio for a full hour of history, music and light-hearted fun. This program was produced by Rebecca Glofelty for Real People Media, Inc and was funded in part by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.

March 1: Heikinpaiva

  • In this episode we celebrate Heikinpaiva- Hancock's Finnish-American festival through Finnish inspired music, trivia and some good Finnish jokes!  Musical guests Laurel Premo and Michael Beauchamp of Red Tail Ring share how they've been inspired by Finnish music;  In “9-1-1 in the 906,” Dispatch Man teaches Little Girl the meaning of Sisu, a Finnish word that's commonly used across Michigan's Copper Country;  The Upper Peninsula Sauna Association share's an important message; and there's more great music by the Copper Cats with Jerry Younce on Guitar, Bill Carrothers on piano, Zack Ott on percussion and Harry South on bass!

March 8: The Great Bear Chase

  • In this hour, we visit Swedetown trails to take part in the Great Bear Chase x-country ski race.  Storyteller Pete Griffin explains why coming in second in his snowshoe race wasn't so bad;  Micah Middaugh and Trevor Hobbs of Breathe Owl Breathe perform some wintry tunes; and the Red Jacket Actors head to the sauna for a little “therapy.”  We round out the show with music by the Copper Cats with Jerry Younce on guitar, Bill Carrothers on piano, Carrie Biolo on percussion and Harry South on bass!
