After a run of 11 years at the State Theatre in Traverse City, broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera performances will no longer be streamed live at the theatre.

In a statement on its website the State Theatre says the Met Opera required them to commit to broadcasting the entire season of performances. The theatre confirmed that the live performance times conflict with its ability to show first-run movies.

T. Michael Jackson is a former Traverse City city commissioner and a loyal fan of the opera series.

He says he’s been to the Met Opera in New York, but he liked watching it at the State Theatre even better.

“And the reason for that is that you could see the singers up close, you could really see the expressions on their face," he says. "It’s a totally different kind of experience and an absolutely fantastic one, so we will miss it a great deal.”

The State Theatre says it plans to bring in other special events to help supplement the absence of the opera series this year.

The Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts in Manistee and the Lyric Theatre in Harbor Springs will continue to broadcast Live MET Opera performances.
