All housing discrimination cases against Bay View settled

BAY VIEW CHAUTAUQUA INCLUSIVENESS GROUP

Housing discrimination cases against Bay View Association near Petoskey have been settled. The resort community has been accused of discriminating against non-Christian homeowners.

Two lawsuits filed by current homeowners and a claim filed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development allege Bay View broke fair housing laws by only allowing Christians to own homes at the resort community.

The cases were settled on Friday during mediation. The parties are holding off on sharing details until final documents are signed but provided this statement:

The complaints filed with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the private lawsuits involving Bay View’s membership requirements have been resolved after a healthy and productive exchange and mutual demonstration of goodwill. In the settlement, Bay View has committed to nondiscrimination while continuing true to its identity and heritage. Until final documents are signed, there will be no further comment.

The statement did not offer any specifics on how Bay View might adjust its rules for homeowners. It currently asks members to respect the principles of the United Methodist Church and Christian values.
