IPR's Ed Ronco speaks with Suzanne Mettler, a political scientist at Cornell University whose latest book, "Rural Versus Urban," explores how geographic divisions give way to political ones — even when rural and urban residents share many points of view. The book makes frequent mention of northern Michigan and features interviews with local party chairs. Mettler will appear at the National Writers Series in Traverse City on Saturday, Jan. 31 with guest host Zoe Clark, host of the "It's Just Politics" podcast from Michigan Public.

Plus, Michigan high schoolers can now cash in on name, image and likeness opportunities. And bluegrass musician Billy Strings, who got his start playing gigs in Traverse City, announces more tour dates in Michigan.

Ed Ronco is IPR's news director and the local host of "Morning Edition."
Ellie Katz reports on science, conservation and the environment. She also produces stories for Points North.
