Welcome to Intermezzo from Interlochen Public Radio, where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.
This week, Christy L'Esperance's co-host is a rock expert named Brody, who will talk about five types of rocks and minerals. Christy will match each rock with a piece of rock-related music!
Today's rock is the green basalt, an igneous rock formed underground in magma. It has iron, small holes filled with calcite and epidote, with small flecks of copper that can be seen in it. And fun fact: it has been found in Michigan's Upper Peninsula!
Because the green basalt is borne from magma, today's music is Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür's Symphony no. 4, "Magma."
