Love: Food — Tuesday

Saturday is Valentine's Day — let's reflect on what we love about life!

Hear today's full episode by clicking "Listen" above or find "Intermezzo" from your favorite podcast app.

Welcome to Intermezzo from Interlochen Public Radio, where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.

Saturday is Valentine's Day, and while that day normally celebrates romantic love, it brings to mind how much there is to love about life.

Today we're sharing our common love of food. Who doesn't love a delicious treat?

Each person has their own taste, but each of us has a favorite. Our enjoyment of food engages all of the senses — taste, smell, texture, sight and even sound — think of crackling bacon or the satisfying crunch of an apple. People call themselves chocolate-lovers, cheese-lovers and lima bean lovers. We use the word "love" in connection with food all the time.

And when we love something, we write music about it. American composer William Bolcom spent time as a child playing the piano for local women's clubs meetings.

As an adult, he wrote a piece that recalls that wild spread. He called it "Lime Jello, Marshmallow, Cottage Cheese Surprise."

This week's Mystery Melody

It's time to test your ears. Each week we have a mystery melody that we have to figure out together. It relates to our topic. (We'll make the melody less mysterious each day.)

If you know the mystery melody, text your name and the title and we’ll give you a shout out on Friday. The number to text is (833) 490-4718.
