Welcome to Intermezzo from Interlochen Public Radio, where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.
Christy L'Esperance will be exploring music and life lessons from the musical "Wicked" with her co-host this week, 12-year-old Quinn.
"Wicked" teaches us about friendship, the power of confidence, propaganda, good and evil and free will. Today, we'll start with friendship.
If you haven't seen the musical yet, it follows the wicked witch and Glinda, the good witch, during their school days. The wicked witch's name is Elphaba. At this point in the story, Elphaba isn't wicked at all — in fact, she's very thoughtful and kind. And Glinda might not be as good as people think she is, but she's very popular. When they become roommates, they really don't like each other — they're too different. You can really sense it the song "What is this feeling?"
Stephen Schwartz - "What is this feeling?"
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - "An die Freundschaft"
This week's Mystery Melody
It's time to test your ears. Each week we have a mystery melody that we have to figure out together. It relates to our topic. (We'll make the melody less mysterious each day.)
If you know the mystery melody, text your name and the title and we’ll give you a shout out on Friday. The number to text is (833) 490-4718.
