Military Music with Lilianna: Air Force — Thursday

This week on Intermezzo, we're thanking our United States veterans for their service and learning about the music for each branch of the military.

Hear today's full episode by clicking "Listen" above or find "Intermezzo" from your favorite podcast app.

Welcome to Intermezzo from Interlochen Public Radio, where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.

Christy L'Esperance will be exploring military music with her co-host, Lilianna, who has family members who have served in several branches of the U.S. military.

Our cohost this week, Lilianna!

So far we've given musical salutes to three branches that were formed before the United States was even a country — all 250 years ago during the Revolutionary War. Today, we take a big leap forward to a branch that could not possibly have existed during the Revolutionary War because there were no airplanes back then. The Air Force began as part of the Army in 1907 as the Aeronautical Division of the U.S. Signal Corps and the first military plane was the 1909 Wright Military Flyer. As planes evolved, the Air Force evolved finally into an independent branch in 1947.

This week's Mystery Melody

It's time to test your ears. Each week we have a mystery melody that we have to figure out together. It relates to our topic. (We'll make the melody less mysterious each day.)

If you know the mystery melody, text your name and the title and we’ll give you a shout out on Friday. The number to text is (833) 490-4718.

Christy L'Esperance is Classical IPR's morning host and producer.
