Welcome to Intermezzo from Interlochen Public Radio, where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.
Christy L'Esperance will be exploring military music with her co-host, Lilianna, who has family members who have served in several branches of the U.S. military.
Yesterday we talked about the oldest branch of the military, the US Army, which was established on June 14, 1775. Today we'll talk about another branch that was formed before the United States was a country — the US Navy, formed just shy of 4 months after the Army on October 13, 1775. Remember Paul Revere's Ride in April of that year, where he called out "One if by Land, Two if by Sea?" Well, if the Army was formed to take care of the land, who would take care of the sea?
The Continental Congress authorized the fitting out of two armed vessels to intercept British supply ships during the Revolutionary War. This force became the Continental Navy. It was disbanded after the war but reestablished permanently by Congress on April 30, 1798, as the Department of the Navy. The Navy has been crucial in protecting U.S. interests at sea.
