Welcome to Intermezzo from Interlochen Public Radio, where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.
Christy L'Esperance will be exploring military music with her co-host, Lilianna, who has family members who have served in several branches of the U.S. military.
Yesterday we learned about the branch with the oldest hymn, but today we'll salute the oldest branch of the U.S. military. It's played a central role in every major American conflict since the Revolution. In fact, this branch was formed on June 14, 1775, before the United States was even a country!
The Continental Army was established by the Second Continental Congress to fight the British in the American Revolutionary War. It was formed out of existing colonial militias and placed under the command of General George Washington.
