Welcome to Intermezzo from Interlochen Public Radio, where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.
Christy L'Esperance will be exploring military music with her co-host, Lilianna, who has family members who have served in several branches of the U.S. military.
We'll start with the branch of the military which was founded exactly 250 years ago today. On November 10, 1775, the United States Marine Corp was founded — before the U.S. was even a country!
During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress resolved to raise two battalions of Marines to fight on land and sea throughout the Revolution. And to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Marines, there have been Marine week celebrations going on across the country.
