Welcome to Intermezzo from Interlochen Public Radio, where we take a few minutes to bounce some ideas around about classical music.
Christy L'Esperance and her cohost, 11-year-old Vivienne, will talk about Circus Arts. So far we've explored circus music, high flying stunts and object manipulation like juggling. Today we'll explore feats of equilibrium, such as balancing on a tightrope!
There's a 1928 silent film starring Charlie Chaplin that features a tightrope scene. He's not really a trained tightrope walker, but pretends to be one with a hidden safety wire hooked to his pants. He's high above the crowd when his safety line comes off and he's faced with walking the tightrope for real.
This is the song that plays during the scene. Charlie Chaplin composed the music himself. We'll hear a modern recording made by Yuri Medianik and the Pluri_Art Orchestra. You can hear the character catch his balance during the pauses.
