Alphorns and Oktoberfest: Alphorns with friends — Thursday

This week we're talking about the alphorn, featuring dedicated alphorn players Barb and Scott.

Hear today's full episode by clicking "Listen" above or find "Intermezzo" from your favorite podcast app.

I'm Christy L'Esperance and cohosting with me this week are Barb & Scott. They both play an instrument that is both hard to miss and rarely seen: the alphorn.

Yesterday we heard that the alphorn can be heard up to 6 miles away. Today we'll find out if that mixes well with playing with other instruments. And if you're playing with groups, you've got to find a way to haul that giant elephant trunk horn around somehow.

Just over a year ago, 1,006 alphorn players gathered in Switzerland to set the Guinness World Record for the largest alphorn ensemble. They needed a giant hillside just to fit them together.

This week's Mystery Melody

It's time to test your ears. Each week we have a mystery melody that we have to figure out together. It relates to our topic. (We'll make the melody less mysterious each day.)

If you know the mystery melody, text your name and the title and we’ll give you a shout out on Friday. The number to text is (833) 490-4718.

Christy L'Esperance is Classical IPR's morning host and producer.
