Updated January 24, 2017: The TCAPS board approved the sale of Old Mission Peninsula School to the Old Mission Education Foundation Monday night.
An education foundation is poised to buy the Old Mission Peninsula School. Traverse City Area Public Schools reached a tentative agreement to sell the building to the Old Mission Peninsula Education Foundation for $1.1 million. The sale would go through in 2018.
"We believe we were able to reach a sale price and purchase agreement for the Old Mission Peninsula School building that is in the best interest of the school district and the region's taxpayers," said TCAPS board president, Erik Falconer, in a press release.
TCAPS announced last month they would stop running the school in 2018, after initially considering shuttering the school last spring. They are redistricting Old Mission students to Eastern Elementary School beginning in the fall of 2018.
But Allison O'Keefe, the foundation’s president, says they plan to keep the school open for Old Mission kids.
"Through the dedication and generosity of our community, we now have the opportunity to purchase a building that we believe is a valuable asset and will allow us to continue offering educational opportunities on Old Mission," O'Keefe said in a press release.
The agreement requires the approval of the TCAPS board to move forward. The board meets on Monday.
